Who are you, really?
August 23rd, 2009

So tonight Christian talked about who we really are. In small groups, he asked us questions like, “What are three words you’d choose to describe who you want to be?” “What are some character traits that you need to work on?” and “What’s the square root of 28,224?” These deep questions got me thinking, “Who AM I, really? If everything I cared about were stripped away from me, everything that gives me an identity in the eyes of the world… in that moment of truth, would I still be the same person? ”
In the eyes of the world, we’re one person. Sometimes, we wear a mask depending on what people expect of us, who we’re with, or how we’re feeling. Sometimes we wear so many masks that the true self, the one we’re called by God to be, is lost. Realizing which masks we wear when can help us to know more about ourselves and how to better be who we’re supposed to be. How about you? How many layers of masks are you wearing? When are you simply yourself?

Yeah, I thought that the teaching was great Christian. I thought that it was something that we can all relate too. And not only that i feel that it is a good thing for us to start thinking about shedding away these ” masks ” or other things that ultimatly lead us away from christ. And i Would just like to let everyone know that we all have masks weather or not we admit it we all have had a time in our life were we might not have been as “real” as we are made to be. Thanks for a great teaching…….i will be thinking about it and looking for ways that i am able to take away everything that is hiding my true identity.

John – excellent post. I love it. I agree david – it was such a good teaching. LOL!
No really – I think it is challenging for people of all ages. I know that one person I can totally be myself with is Mandy. She sees right through any masks I put on anyway, so I’m just totally free to be myself.
Here’s an interesting questions – do we (or can we) wear masks with God?

I feel like that there are times when i might be putting on my own mask in almost an attemp to try and make myself come across as something beter than i am….or just something that i am not. However whenever i think about it i realize that it is just a stupid thing for me too do bc i am Gods creation and there is no way that i am fooling him. But to the question” Can we wear masks with God?” i feel like we try to but i still dont think that it is a good idea……i just feel that we should try to be real with God and with ourselfs……
